Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) components protect the electronic components of devices from electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by other devices (or themselves). Other devices are not the only potential source of EMI – interference harming electronic components can also be generated by natural phenomenon such as nearby lightning. Either way, EMI can cause device damage, loss of reception, abnormal noise in sound, or disrupted video signal. The electromagnetic waves that cause interference are called noise.
Electromagnetic relays
Electromagnetic relays, electronic components operating on the principle of electromagnetic attraction, are particularly at risk from EMI if they are not protected by EMC components, as it can cause the magnetic switch which uses the magnet for creating a magnetic field, to switch on and off. Accordingly, in order to prevent undesired mechanical operations, protecting the elecrtromagentic relays from EMI with EMC components is an absolute must.
